The New Zealand land surveying office, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) / Toitu te whenua, provides topographic maps of New Zealand on their website. The maps are in TIFF format and the available scales are 1:50000 and 1:250000.

The NZ Open GPS Project provides up to date and routing capable streep maps for Garmin GPS receivers.

With the help of the OSM Composer and a few other tools you can build topographic maps from the raw data of the Open Street Map project and the NASA radar data that can be used with Garmin GPS receivers.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is the ideal starting point to get up to date information on tracks and huts.
